The power of fear is big these days. It overpowers us while making us believe we are in control.
Fear is not stupid. It knows exactly what it is doing. We’re left to lie in the roadside ditch as it destroys us and moves on to another unsuspecting soul.
The only thing is, we don’t see the power of fear. We don’t recognize it most of the time. After it is too late, we’re already under its control.
In the poem about fear called “I Give You Back” by Joy Harjo, she perfectly describes the power of fear. Below is an excerpt from her poem which I love so much.
Oh, you have choked me, but I gave you the leash.
You have gutted me, but I gave you the knife.
You have devoured me, but I laid myself across the fire.
I take myself back, fear.
You are not my shadow any longer.I Give You Back by Joy Harjo
The part about Joy Harjo’s poem that I really love is how she depicts our role in the power of fear. All too often, we are oblivious to it and the role we play in how it shows up.
Overtaken By The Power Of Fear
Whether in healing or everyday life, it is there waiting to control and manipulate us. We try to explain it away with our politics and beliefs. We try to explain it away through our unconscious online behavior. In many ways, fear runs over us in how we interact with our
As I’ve found in my healing journey, the power of fear can keep us from making progress. It is so powerful, and if we can only stop and recognize it, we’re half the way home.
Fear isn’t something that is a concept only, because this stuff hides deep within your cells. It permeates every inch of your mind-body connection. The cells cower in fear, causing the mind and body to react in ways that show up as pain, anxiety, depression, emotional struggles, numbing, and avoidance.
While the power of fear can be a thief in the night, it is also something we can learn from in life. It can teach us awareness and a deeper consciousness if we allow it. It can show us so much in life and help us understand our journey if we go in and take ourselves back.
Listen To Joy Harjo’s Poem
Are you being overtaken by the power of fear?
If your answer is yes, what are you doing to reverse that and telling it the words Joy Harjo states?
If your answer is no, that you are not being overtaken by the power of fear, then I would gently ask – are you sure? What evidence do you have that you are or are not? Remember, fear is so crafty and cunning and sneaky. It gets us to believe that which we cannot see.
