Many years back, I was struggling to find my will to live. The hope to see it through was almost too much to consider. I felt in that moment as if the odds were stacked against me and no matter what, I would not make it.
What's Inside?
After all, I had come out of Conversion Disorder and paralysis. I was trying to learn how to sit up in bed, walk again, and get more than one word out every few minutes. My memory had gone, and I was struggling with the simplest pieces of my life. Walking up an incline was a challenge as were depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts.
In a book of poetry that I published many years ago, one of the poems I included was called, “The Hope To See It Through.” I’ll include a small snippet of it, but check out this poetry book on LuLu Press for the rest.
The Hope To See It Through
(by Don Shetterly)
The courage to face the impossible,
The strength to fight the fears,
The risk to take the chance,
The hope to see it through.
Of course, the poem goes on from there, but like the title says, it is about the hope to see it through. If you would like to read all of it, is included in my book, My Journey Through Words. When we’re faced with the odds stacked against us, sometimes that is one of the hardest things to remember. We may listen to what someone says, but having hope in these moments is nothing short of challenging.
Finding my way through the mess my life had become was not easy. It was challenging beyond any comprehension. I would not wish it on my worst enemy. I would not wish it on anyone.
Some people say the hope to see it through is ridiculous and flimsy at best. They scoff as if it is nothing more than an empty vessel giving a person a false sense of direction. All I know is that without it, I would not have made it. The hope to see it through was all I had at that moment.
When we are faced with having next to nothing left at the moment we are in, then there is nothing empty about hope. There is nothing flimsy or unwelcomed about it. In fact, it may just be what ties us from the unimaginable to what is possible.
Sometimes hope is what is there to help give us the courage and determination to go further and discover more. Often the hope to see it through is what sustains us long enough to take a rest and then continue the climb on our journey. Without hope, life becomes much more difficult than it is.
Remember the words of that poem I shared. It is the courage to face the impossible, the strength to fight the fears. It is the risk to take the chance and the hope to see it through.
