Question 1: Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a person in long-term recovery from alcoholism and codependency.
I hold a PhD in Psychological Studies in Education and an MA in Psychology, both from Stanford University.
As a college professor, I wrote 3 books for teachers-in-training and 2 books for experienced teachers’ professional growth.
Question 2: What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book, “50 Ways to Worry Less Now: Reject Negative Thinking to Find Peace, Clarity, and Connection,” began as a memoir chronicling my three short marriages, career as a professional horseback rider, and adventures hitchhiking across the north of Spain–all before I turned 38. My wise fourth husband suggested that, instead, I write a self-help book with “all those helpful things you say when you counsel people on the phone.” At that point, “Worry Less Now” was born.
Question 3: How long does it take you to write a book?
This book took six years to write, as I took a year off to write a textbook. I self-published with Possum Hill Press, and used a developmental editor and four groups of “beta-readers” to revise the book several times for clarity and interest. I’m grateful that the right people showed up at just the right time to make the book interesting, practical, attractive, and clear.I’m currently working on a new book based on toxic work environments. I’ve come to realize that one of the major roadblocks that hinder higher engagement and productivity within the workplace, has to do with toxicity.
Question 4: Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I meditate before I write so I can get the inspiration and clarity to flow.
1) Invest in a developmental editor to read your best draft of the manuscript to assess it for organization, interest, and use of language.
2) Do NOT use any publisher that requires you to use their in-house editors and other services. The quality is often sub-standard because after they get their dollars, they’re not invested in sales.
3) Make sure the book is clear, well structured, and well-edited. Then, 3-4 months before “launch,” print 25-50 “Advance Review Copies” and send them out for reviewers and book contests. Use the feedback to make final revisions and add recommendations to the back cover.
I’ve made a lot of friends through the non-fiction writers FaceBook group and Twitter. Harriet Hunter’s daily meditation book, Miracles of Recovery, is a favorite. Her writing has a vivid and witty quality that has encouraged me to be bolder in my writing–more “me.”
Question 7: What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m creating a “Worry Less Now Workbook” to launch in the next six months.
I also write a weekly blog, a monthly newsletter, and appear on several podcasts.
Question 8: Where can someone purchase your books, and how can they reach you?
I offer special prices for the paperback, e-book, and audiobook at https://GigiLanger.com/buy The price is $12.75 for a signed paperback with a PDF workbook.
